Exciting developments are occurring in the education field, particularly with the advancements AI can bring. Schools must adapt to this new age by moving away from outdated infrastructure. Bond University in Australia faced the question of upgrading their outdated data center or exploring other options. Director of IT Services Ann Yardley decided to transition to the cloud to support their workloads alongside on-premises solutions.

The university chose Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) for several reasons, including avoiding vendor lock-in and receiving personalized guidance. This allowed for seamless migration to Azure without the need for refactoring. This decision has enabled the university to achieve multiple goals and save on infrastructure changes, software licensing, and network configuration.

Partnering with Nutanix provided Bond University with increased agility to support student projects and experiments. Various services and systems were migrated to the cloud, benefiting academic, financial, and administrative functions across different schools within the university. The deployment allowed for smoother operations and cost-effective management.

Looking ahead, the university plans to integrate their ERP solution with other cloud services and explore migrating legacy systems to enhance mobility and flexibility. Acknowledging that careful consideration is necessary when moving workloads to the public cloud, the university is also working on a FinOps strategy to optimize automation and control costs.

Nutanix’s General Manager emphasized the importance of carefully assessing workload compatibility and being intentional about cloud migration. Embracing the public cloud can drive innovation and flexibility, especially for modern and composable applications. The vision for hybrid multi-cloud is to allow users the freedom to move data and workloads efficiently.

As Bond University continues its cloud journey, the focus is on developing a FinOps strategy, archival and data management in the cloud versus on-prem. This approach aims to streamline processes, empower researchers with self-service capabilities, and manage costs effectively in the cloud environment. In conclusion, the university’s adoption of NC2 has paved the way for future innovations and optimizations in their cloud infrastructure.
