Climate protection has a new enemy – the rise of “AI slopaganda”. Thanks to generative artificial intelligence platforms, climate misinformation is now spreading itself, a federal Senate investigation has found.
The old enemies have not gone away – climate falsehoods are also being spread by advocacy groups representing the fossil fuel industry, by community members with genuine concerns but misguided beliefs, and by websites that offer clickbait to drive advertising revenue.
The Special Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy has been examining these issues for nearly eight months. The report, released last week, makes for grim reading.
