Chris DeRusha, the former federal chief information security officer and deputy national cyber chief, is set to join Google Cloud to head up the company’s global public sector compliance efforts. The move comes after DeRusha’s departure from the federal government last month, following over three years in the role of federal CISO.
In his new role at Google Cloud, DeRusha will be responsible for expanding the company’s suite of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and security products specifically tailored for the public sector, both in the United States and internationally. He will report to Jeanette Manfra, Google Cloud’s global head of security and compliance, who praised DeRusha’s extensive experience in designing and implementing cutting-edge security and critical infrastructure programs.
Manfra highlighted DeRusha’s unique perspective on national security challenges, which he gained during his time in the federal government. DeRusha’s impact as federal CISO included playing a key role in the development of critical cybersecurity initiatives, such as the Biden Administration’s EO 2021 on Cybersecurity and the national cybersecurity strategy and implementation plan.
Speaking at the Google Public Sector Forum last October, DeRusha emphasized the Biden administration’s focus on addressing long-term challenges, such as artificial intelligence strategies and combating ransomware. His move to Google Cloud marks a return to the private sector after a brief stint at Ford Motor Company and several years in senior security positions at DHS and the White House.
DeRusha’s extensive background in cybersecurity and technology policy makes him a valuable addition to Google Cloud’s team, as the company continues to strengthen its offerings for the public sector. His experience in both the public and private sectors will be instrumental in supporting Google Cloud’s global public sector customers and advancing security and compliance efforts.
Overall, DeRusha’s appointment at Google Cloud represents a strategic move by the tech giant to enhance its presence in the public sector and further develop its capabilities in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. His leadership and expertise are expected to drive innovation and address the evolving security challenges faced by governments and specific industries around the world.
