Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has recently sold his property in California’s Silicon Valley for $22.5 million, following a short time on the market. The property, located in the upscale Bay Area neighborhood of Atherton, was listed for sale in late April for $24.5 million and was sold last week. Records of the sale have not yet been made public, meaning the identity of the buyer remains unknown.
Schmidt, 69, and his wife Wendy Schmidt, a businesswoman and philanthropist, acquired the more than 3-acre property over a period of about 20 years beginning in 1990. They initially purchased the main house for $2 million and then acquired neighboring plots in subsequent years to expand the main house and add a guest house, garden grounds, and a greenhouse imported from the UK.
Atherton is known for being one of the most expensive cities in the US, with prices surging this spring. The average listing price in Atherton was $13.9 million in May, nearly 50% higher than the previous year, according to data from real estate agent.com. The main house, which was built in 1969 and renovated by the Schmidts, boasts features such as fireplaces, beamed ceilings, and spacious, light-filled living areas.
The main house also includes various private outdoor spaces on the upper level, including multiple terraces and balconies. Additionally, the property features a courtyard with a pool and spa, an entertainment pavilion, open lawn, and an outdoor fireplace. The lush landscape surrounding the property’s greenhouse is adorned with raised beds and fruit trees.
Schmidt held the position of Google CEO from 2001 to 2011, followed by a term as the company’s executive chairman until 2015. A request for comment from Schmidt’s website went unanswered at the time of reporting. The sale of the property was initially covered by Global Mansion magazine.
