MELBOURNE Fla. – An incident at a Florida Tech dormitory ended in a fatal shooting involving a police officer Friday night.

According to the Melbourne Police Department and Florida Tech’s Facebook page, at 10:49 p.m. police and campus security responded to a security threat at Roberts Hall regarding a man who was reportedly armed with a knife and assaulted students.

Investigators said they cornered the suspect at Roberts Hall, where he pounced on an officer. Melbourne police said an MPD officer and a campus security officer shot and beat the suspect. Officials said they tried life-saving measures, but the suspect died of his injuries on the scene.

The man was identified as Alhaji M. Sow, 18, a current FIT student from Georgia.

The Melbourne police officer was injured during the confrontation.
