“Resilience” is the buzzword for how to be successful in changing environments, and companies that don’t incorporate it into their operating environments see the impact in key business measures like customer satisfaction or user abandonment.
In 2022 and beyond, Gartner expects IT leaders to include five key components in their strategic roadmaps to ensure the adaptive resilience of their digital platforms. They are:
Software supply chain security
High-profile attacks on IT operations tool vendors like SolarWinds and Kaseya pose a serious and immediate threat to IT resilience. IT and security executives are discovering the very tools that are used to ensure service reliability, resilience, or continuity of delivery , are now a potential target and companies are completely unprotected. They need to be constantly vigilant and guide their teams to protect the integrity of the software contained in their tools.
By 2025, 40% of companies will implement security measures in the software supply chain to improve IT resilience, up from less than 5% in 2021.
Increased regulatory measures and official requirements are expected, which aim at continuous transparency in the software development, procurement and provision process. Over the next five years, the use cases of operational monitoring and security monitoring will converge, driven by the introduction of DevSecOps, Cloud native Architecture samples, site reliability engineering or SRE and operating models of product teams.
There is an urgent need to master DevOps practices both on a large scale and at high speed to ensure high quality software delivery. To be successful, IT executives must build their teams’ competency in artificial intelligence and machine learning to optimize development, testing and operations, remove bottlenecks and accelerate the release cadence.
The future will be dominated by AI-supported development and test approaches that are well integrated into an overall DevOps strategy. AI-enhanced DevOps practices rely on AI-enabled tools to identify applications that will benefit most from reducing human intervention and improving each stage of the pipeline. SRE emphasizes the engineering disciplines that lead to improved reliability. It is a collection of systems and principles that are used to design and operate scalable, resilient systems.
Site reliability engineers work with the customer or product owner to understand the operational requirements and define service level goals or SLOs. SRE practices help break silos between traditional operations, disaster recovery, and product teams. SLOs and bug budgets help foster a technical mindset that focuses on continuous innovation while improving reliability.
By the end of 2025, 30% of companies will establish new roles with an emphasis on IT resilience and increase end-to-end reliability, compatibility and recoverability by at least 45%.
Chaos engineering is the use of experimental and potentially destructive error checking to reveal weaknesses and weaknesses in a complex system. These approaches make it possible to learn from the events that occur and to implement and improve response measures iteratively.
