First local case of influenza recorded by HPE health unit

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health is urging residents to get their flu vaccinations as the region confirms its first flu case. The flu vaccines are available at healthcare providers and HPEPH pharmacies and clinics, reducing the risk of serious illness and protecting vulnerable populations and the healthcare system. In a public notice, the health unit announced the first case of influenza A for the 2023-24 season, emphasizing the importance of getting vaccinated.

Influenza can cause mild to severe illness and lead to serious complications in healthy individuals. The flu vaccine is free to anyone over six months old in Ontario. Dr. Ethan Toumishey, Ministry of Health and CEO of HPEPH, emphasized the importance of getting both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines to protect oneself and others this respiratory season.

Residents are reminded to stay up to date on flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines if eligible, stay home when sick, wear masks in crowded indoor spaces or when recovering from illness, and practice good hygiene habits to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. By taking these precautions, residents can help protect the healthcare system and ensure healthcare workers are available for those in need.
