Federal lawmakers urge government agencies to accelerate long-term efforts to update aging information technology systems that hamper services and create security risks.

The obstacles holding agencies back are just as old, according to federal IT experts: tight budgets and a shortage of skilled workers.

The issue has become more urgent during the Covid-19 pandemic, when technological deficiencies led to disruption and security risks as many federal operations switched to remote working, said Senator Maggie Hassan (D., NH).

Ms. Hassan, chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Spending Monitoring, said at a hearing Tuesday that the additional cost of supporting legacy systems was around a third of all federal IT spending last year, which was US $ 90 billion Dollars.
