The Australian Government has established a National AI Security Institute to monitor new AI capabilities, assess risks and support regulatory responses as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, the economy and public services.
Announced during National AI Week, the new institute will work across government to provide technical assessments, advise on regulatory updates and coordinate responses to potential harms.
His responsibilities include ensuring AI companies comply with Australian laws relating to fairness, transparency, consumer rights and online security.
The government said the institute will help Australia maximize the economic opportunities of AI while ensuring protections remain robust.
It will also work with international partners, including the International Network of AI Safety Institutes, and contribute to global efforts to address the risks posed by advanced AI systems.
