The San Francisco Giants will be opening Oracle Park to fans to honor Willie Mays and watch the historic Rickwood game, which originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area. Fans who were unable to attend the special celebration at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama will have the opportunity to pay tribute to Mays and MLB’s tribute to the Negro Leagues. The Giants announced that they will be televising the Rickwood game on the scoreboard at Oracle Park, with images of Mays before and after the game and a sculpture of “No. 24” in center field where he spent his Hall of Fame career. A condolence book will also be available for fans to sign at the warning track. Gates at Oracle Park will open at 12 pm PT and first pitch at Rickwood is scheduled for 4:15 pm PT. The event will conclude at 8 pm PT, and admission is free.
In addition to the public celebration, the Giants wore “May 24” patches on their uniforms for Wednesday’s series finale against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field as a tribute to Mays. Giants pitcher Logan Webb commented on the significance of Mays, stating that they will play in his honor as he is known as “The Giant” and “The Say Hey Kid.” Mays passed away peacefully at the age of 93, but his legacy will continue to live on forever. The team’s dedication to honoring Mays suggests that they will likely continue to pay tribute throughout the remainder of the 2024 MLB season.
Details of the public celebration of Willie Mays’ life will be announced at a later date by the San Francisco Giants. Fans are encouraged to download and follow the Giants Talk podcast for updates and further information on Mays’ legacy and the team’s continued dedication to honoring him.
