Exploring Montreal with Miles Greenberg

Miles Greenberg, a 26-year-old artist, was inspired to pursue art after witnessing Marina Abramović’s performance at the New York Museum of Modern Art when he was 12 years old. This experience led him to drop out of high school in Montreal at the age of 17 to focus on independent research on movement and architecture. Now, Greenberg is showcasing his sculpture and performance work in a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto and will also exhibit at the Palazzo Berggruen for the Biennale of Venice.

In a guide to Montreal, Greenberg shares his favorite spots from his teenage years as an art school dropout. These include Olive et Gourmando, a bustling cafe and lunch spot in the Old Port district, and un po’di più, the Italian cousin of Olive + G with a more studious vibe. He also recommends Aux Vivres, where he survived on their Deluxe Tempeh Salade during COVID-19, and Eve b., a large second-hand store with a cafe in the back garden. Additionally, Greenberg praises the Phi Foundation for Contemporary Art as the best arts space in Canada.

Greenberg reminisces about Montreal’s Chinatown, where he spent hours at a bubble tea shop with friends after school, and recommends trying Canadian ginseng from the herb stores in the neighborhood. He also mentions a cozy cocktail bar called La Esmeralda, where a friend created a special off-menu drink for him and Bar Le Stud, a trashy gay bar with slot machines and sticky surfaces.

Overall, Greenberg’s guide to Montreal reflects his personal experiences and favorite spots from his teenage years as an aspiring artist. The eclectic mix of cafes, art spaces, and nightlife venues showcases the vibrant and diverse culture of Montreal that has inspired Greenberg’s artistic journey.
