In the murder trial of Karen Read, witness Jennifer McCabe denied allegations that she performed and deleted a Google search about hypothermia at 2:27 am, concerning the death of John O’Keefe. McCabe’s Google searches have become pivotal in Read’s defense, as her lawyers are attempting to shift blame for O’Keefe’s death to others. Read is facing charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a collision causing injury and death.

During the trial, McCabe testified that on the night in question, she was at a bar with family and friends when Read and O’Keefe joined the group. After leaving the bar, McCabe’s sister invited everyone to their home, where Read, O’Keefe, and McCabe were present. The defense alleges that O’Keefe was harmed by others and left outside in a snowstorm, implicating McCabe in a wider conspiracy.

McCabe’s cell phone data showed that she conducted Google searches related to basketball after returning home early in the morning of January 29. The defense questioned McCabe about her knowledge of hypothermia and how long it would take someone to freeze to death, to which McCabe responded that she searched for basketball-related information as she had been texting in a group chat about basketball.

During cross-examination, McCabe’s search history was scrutinized, showing multiple searches related to hypothermia and freezing to death. The defense insinuated that McCabe attempted to cover up incriminating searches and even accused her of deleting a search related to O’Keefe’s death. Despite the evidence presented, McCabe maintained her innocence and denied deleting any incriminating search, stating that she cared deeply for O’Keefe and would never let harm come to him.

In redirect examination, McCabe clarified that she left an internet tab open after finishing her basketball searches, which Read later utilized to ask about hypothermia. McCabe’s testimony highlighted the complexity of the case and the contrasting narratives presented by the prosecution and defense. The trial continues as both sides present evidence and testimonies to support their respective arguments.
