EU scrutinizes Microsoft’s billion OpenAI deal

The European Union is looking into Microsoft’s $13 billion investment in OpenAI, specifically focusing on OpenAI’s exclusive use of Microsoft’s Azure cloud services. EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager is expected to investigate the matter further, questioning Microsoft’s competitors and customers about any exclusivity clauses. This scrutiny could potentially lead to formal investigations and possible fines if anti-competitive behavior is found. The EU’s review of the Microsoft-OpenAI partnership comes after concerns were raised during the CEO transition at OpenAI, where Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella played a significant role. This investigation is part of a larger effort to address concerns about power dynamics in the partnership and potential impacts on competition in AI and cloud computing markets. In addition to the EU review, similar investigations are being conducted by the UK Competition and Markets Authority and the US Federal Trade Commission.
