ERDC Names New HPE Cray Supercomputer ‘Barfoot’ After Mississippi Medal of Honor Recipient – HPCwire

VICKSBURG, Mississippi, January 23, 2026 – The US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is home to some of the most powerful high-performance computing systems in the world, which have recently been named in honor of Mississippi native Medal of Honor recipients. Three of the previous namesake supercomputing systems include Lance Cpl. roy wheat, Captain Ed Freeman and Colonel Kyle Carpenter. The newest pioneer system is called “Barfoot” in recognition of the late Colonel Van T. Barfoot, who was an American hero on and off the battlefield.
