Google is dedicated to helping teenagers prepare for an AI-driven future by providing them with the necessary skills and tools to succeed. The Gemini platform offers guided support, practice materials, real-time feedback, and ideas to help students learn more confidently and creatively. By gaining hands-on experience with generative AI, students can better prepare for the technology-driven world ahead.
Last year, Google launched a responsible Gemini experience for teens using their personal accounts, ensuring content policies were shaped by child development and safety experts. Additional steps have been taken to responsibly introduce this technology to students, including partnering with learning science experts, testing with youth advisory panels, and providing additional data protection for educational users at no cost.
Over the next few months, Gemini will be available to teenage students who meet age requirements using their Google Workspace for Education accounts in over 100 countries worldwide, free of charge for educational institutions. To maintain control, Gemini will be disabled by default for teens until administrators choose to enable it.
The Teen Experience with Gemini includes features designed to identify and prevent inappropriate content and responses, such as illegal substances, from appearing to teen users. The platform also includes a double-check response feature to validate content found on the web, promoting information literacy and critical thinking skills.
Teens will be encouraged to watch an AI literacy video and receive guidance on using generative AI responsibly. A customized version of Gemini, called Learning Coach, powered by LearnLM, will assist students in building knowledge through step-by-step guidance, quizzes, games, and activities.
OpenStax and Common data extensions will soon be integrated into Gemini to provide students with information from reliable sources, further enhancing their learning experience. Google’s commitment to educating teens about AI and preparing them for the future is evident in the development of Gemini and its responsible implementation in educational settings.
