It may have taken 732 days but we finally got an update on Elden ring. FromSoftware’s next brutal adventure was originally featured on the Xbox E3 2019 show, and for the next two years it was called MIA. But the kickoff of the Summer Game Fest 2021! ended on a high note with a new look Elden ring, this time with a three-minute gameplay trailer and a release date of January 2022, plus more details from publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment.
While there is almost enough dissection in the trailer to make up for the two-year wait, this is my biggest souvenir Elden ring is the first time FromSoftware’s “Soulsborne” formula exists in a true open world game, far from the intricate, interconnected mazes that make up most of it Dark souls Trilogy and Blood transferred. And while the FromSoftware philosophy may be difficult to familiarize yourself with in an open world, look no further than a pair of classics in Shadow of the colossuss and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to see how it could work wonderfully.
After a brief opening that sets the tone with ethereal imagery and ominous narratives, the gameplay trailer features a series of expansive, far-reaching shots of environments far larger than anything that previously existed as leeway in FromSoftware games. They all seem to revolve around a massive maroon tree (probably the earth tree), reminiscent of the Yggdrasil from Norse mythology.
Bandai Namco offers this elaboration:
Elden ring offers huge fantastic landscapes and shadowy, complex dungeons that are seamlessly connected to each other. Traverse the breathtaking world on foot or on horseback, alone or online with other players, and immerse yourself completely in the grassy plains, suffocating swamps, spiraling mountains, gloomy castles and other lofty sites never before seen in a FromSoftware title were to be seen.
Some shots in the trailer are reminiscent of moments from the entire history of FromSoftware. There are cliff sides at dusk that are reminiscent of Dark Souls 2‘s Majula, ruins that defy gravity and fold in like Dark Souls 3‘s Dreg Heap and Gothic architecture that reminds you Blood transferred‘s unforgettable Cainhurst Castle. The fight shows moments of camouflage, similar to Sekiro, next to magic spells made by a catalyst like in. were conjured up Dark souls. But even if the individual elements may feel familiar in a vacuum, it is still the way they seem to be connected that makes a difference Elden ring feel unique.
The shot that really sets Elden ring‘s perspective into perspective when the player character summons a decent horse / goat hybrid mount and rides off into the distance. As a premiere for modern FromSoftware games, the mount is featured throughout the trailer and helps you traverse vast plains and bridges, climb high cliffs, and even carry you in battle against standard hostile mobs and a giant dragon. It doesn’t feel like your steed is just a quicker way to get from point A to point B, but rather an integral part of it Elden ring‘s design.
Elden ring‘s horse lover definitely comes to mind Shadow of the colossussee Team Ico’s masterpiece takes place in a world that is oppressively lonely. It feels like the only things that stay alive are you and the 16 massive beings you need to kill. Unless you fully admire the greatness of the beasts, much of your time in the world is spent on long horse rides that force you to really delve into your actions – and what you could become if you killed them Colossi.
That specific feeling of post-battle melancholy is the bread and butter of FromSoftware. Whether it’s killing Sif at Artorias’ tomb or the tragic plot of Emma, the gentle blade, the rush of victory in these games often comes at a terrible price. Elden ring probably won’t be any different.
Likewise, the range of some of the beasts, particularly the giant stone turtle with a bell hanging underneath, feels similar Also shadow of the colossus. However, in this case it doesn’t look like the turtle is a boss, but rather a huge, roaming NPC that may even have explorable ruins on its back.
By and large, however, FromSoftware benefits most from marriage Breath of the wild Open world principles with its unique design philosophy. Breath of the wild‘s portrayal of Hyrule is great without being overwhelming. It lacks clutter but is full of tiny sights, sounds, and encounters that all feel important. It presents a world with simple and recognizable shapes, striking horizons and an intelligent use of height. Lines of sight convey so much information, all of which is anchored in the center of Hyrule Castle and oozing with Calamity Ganon’s malice, and the castle acts as your North Star, just as the Earth Tree mentioned above seems to do.
Breath of the wild encourages you to climb to a high point and explore your surroundings. The feeling of discovering something based on your observation and natural curiosity instead of simply following a marker on a map is really powerful and satisfying. It’s a similar feeling to the first time you play Dark souls, cleared out the undead community, carefully hopped into an elevator and suddenly found myself back in the warm and familiar safety of the Firelink Shrine. To imagine that this feeling is heightened by an open world is exciting to say the least.
FromSoftware’s games afterDemon souls Do an excellent job of visually anticipating areas that you will discover in the future, while also giving them moments to look back and reflect on how far you have come. And while I certainly hope and expect Elden ring‘s open world is more than just a huge space that connects various property sites.
There is so much more to unzip from the Elden ring Gameplay trailers and a few details we received from Bandai Namco and FromSoftware. Its unique combat quirks, specific multiplayer functionality, and lore from A song of ice and fire Creator George RR Martin is still rife with speculation leading up to the game’s release date on January 21, 2022 (despite the delays). But after two long years our first proper look at Elden ring Proved to be everything fans hoped for in a game that took the incredible FromSoftware formula and evolved it in an open world.
