Duke Energy signs Amazon cloud deal

said it had signed a three-year deal with Amazon.

com Inc.’s cloud computing unit as a power and natural gas holding company aims to advance its power grid improvements and clean energy goals.

Based in Charlotte, NC, Duke will use Amazon Web Services to run applications that predict power demand on its power grid and indicate where and how the grid should be updated to meet those needs. The companies declined to comment on the financial terms of the deal announced Thursday.

Duke is aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050, and of its $145 billion in capital expenditure projects over the next decade, about $75 billion will go toward grid upgrades, said Bonnie Titone, the company’s chief information officer .

The power producer is seeking approval for a plan, filed with North Carolina regulators in May, detailing how it would reduce greenhouse gases…
