With the rapid progress in… artificial intelligencecomputer generated images – including hyperrealistic faces – are becoming more and more common. Many look so convincing that it can be difficult to distinguish them from real photos.
In a new study, researchers tested people’s ability to distinguish images of real faces from AI-generated ones and found that most participants I missed most of the AI generated faces. Even “super recognizers” – an elite group with exceptionally strong face processing skills – were only able to correctly identify fake faces as fake 41% of the time. Typical recognition devices correctly recognized only about 30% of AI-generated faces.
