Cybersecurity pro Michaela Barnett didn’t see anyone like her at DEF CON or any of the other security industry events she attended. Neither did your sister Alexandria Barnett.
“We found that so many people have had the experience of not seeing themselves represented,” says Alexandria.
The twins set out to change that. Michaela founded Blacks In Cybersecurity (BIC) in January 2019 with the aim of highlighting and nurturing the Black Community in the security profession by offering a range of activities, from online forums to conferences, meet-ups, seminars and group outings.
“We really strive to be that resource family in order to advance the local people, build a network and influence the culture. When you think of cyber, you think of a white man in a hoodie, think of DEF CON, where you don’t see a lot of people of color who are outside that culture too often.
