Microsoft introduced the Global Skills Initiative this summer to assist 25 million individuals worldwide in acquiring new digital skills. Since the launch, 10 million people have already gained skills to excel in the digital transformation era. The initiative aims to provide access to learning technology essential in the digital economy, as technology creators will shape the future and learning skills should have no barriers. Microsoft is focusing on preparing students for future job opportunities in various technical fields, including development, data science, machine learning, and more, to inspire problem-solving relevant to their lives, families, and communities.

To achieve this goal, Microsoft has partnered with Netflix and other leading creators to create story-driven learning experiences. This includes collaborations with NASA, “Wonder Woman 1984,” and the Smithsonian Learning Labs. The latest learning experience features a young heroine passionate about science and space exploration, tied to the Netflix original film “Over the Moon.” The launch includes three new Microsoft Learn modules focusing on data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, inspired by the film’s themes.

The learning modules involve planning a lunar mission using Python, predicting meteor showers with machine learning, and using AI to recognize objects in images using Azure Custom Vision. These practical modules aim to equip students with skills for future careers, leveraging visual studio code and Azure Cognitive Services. The modules cater to professionals, post-secondary students, and anyone interested in expanding their technical knowledge, with coding skills recommended but not required.

Netflix’s Head of Marketing Partnerships at UCAN, Magno Herrán, expressed excitement about partnering with Microsoft to apply the challenges from “Over the Moon” in real-world technical settings. The film’s story centers around Fei Fei, a young girl who constructs a rocket ship to reach the moon, promoting inclusivity in STEM fields. The film aims to inspire individuals from diverse backgrounds to pursue their dreams through creativity, ingenuity, and collaboration.

Additionally, Microsoft offers other programs to engage students, such as the Imagine Cup 2020, a global student technology competition, and new learning paths for beginners in coding and emerging technologies. These initiatives aim to empower students to develop essential job skills for the future and provide opportunities for mentorship, cash prizes, and global recognition.

Overall, Microsoft’s Global Skills Initiative, in collaboration with Netflix and other partners, seeks to bridge the digital skills gap by offering innovative learning experiences inspired by real-world challenges and fostering a passion for STEM education among students and professionals alike.
