The Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines, has issued a warning about Iranian actors funding and fueling anti-Israel protests on US soil. Haines mentioned that Iran is increasing its aggressive foreign influence efforts by stoking discord and undermining trust in democratic institutions. Recent observations have shown Iranian government actors posing as activists online and providing financial support to protesters.

Haines emphasized the need for vigilance when interacting with unknown online accounts or actors, as some Americans may be unknowingly engaging with or receiving support from a foreign government. Iran is likely to continue relying on its intelligence services and online influencers to promote its narratives.

Anti-Israel protests have been erupting across the country, with some supporting Hamas attacks on Israel and others protesting against Israel’s retaliatory strikes in Gaza. Tehran claimed credit for these attacks, seeking revenge for the killing of Qassem Soleimani, although Hamas denied the claims. The Iranian government has been accused of backing militias across the Middle East to turn countries against Israel and the US.

A report by the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies highlighted the ties between Iranian-backed militias and Tehran’s efforts to sow discord against the US and Israel. Bill Roggio, a senior fellow at FDD, emphasized the animosity of the Iranian regime towards the US and the need for a clear stance from the administration on this issue.

The American public’s understanding of these conflicts is hindered by the willingness of the government to engage in negotiations with Iran, treating it as a responsible actor in the international community. These actions contribute to confusion and lack of clarity regarding Iran’s intentions and actions.
