LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The DeWitt Township Police Department is warning residents after a local victim lost thousands of dollars in a gold-purchase scam.
The scheme was initiated by a fraudulent computer pop-up and involved a physical hand-off of gold at the victim’s residence.
The incident was a fake Microsoft notification that appeared on the victim’s computer, instructing them to call an unknown phone number. Once the call was made, the scammers gained the victim’s trust.
Police said this led to the victim being coerced into buying gold from a local coin shop. The victim then handed it to the scammers after they showed up at the victim’s house.
The DeWitt Township Police Department recommends that anyone contacted by individuals claiming their money is not safe should immediately call 911 and contact their bank.
Police also urged residents to trust their instincts if a request seems out of the ordinary or includes instructions to keep the interaction secret.
