Karen Meechan: Sector back in growth mode

Growth in cybersecurity, data analytics and artificial intelligence saw Scottish tech companies rebound strongly over the past year, with 72% of companies reporting sales growth after a 44% decline in 2020.

According to the annual Scottish Technology Industry Survey by the trade association ScotlandIS, a third (31%) of technology companies now see cybersecurity in particular as an opportunity.

But while the sector is on a positive trajectory, exports are down. Exports fell by 56% last year and one in five Scottish tech companies is not planning to export this year.

The key markets for those looking to export are Europe (68%), the rest of the UK (77%) and North America (60%).
