Critics slam IBM AI feature at Wimbledon for inaccurate information

This year, Wimbledon has introduced a new AI-powered feature called “Catch Me Up” created by IBM. However, the feature has faced criticism for inaccuracies in player cards, such as Emma Raducanu being labeled as the “British number one” when she is actually the country’s third-ranked women’s singles player. The feature also mistakenly described a match between Daria Kasatkina and Shaui Zhang as a showdown between two up-and-coming players, despite their age difference. Although some corrections were made to Raducanu’s card, errors still persisted, including mismatched match win totals for players like Iga Swiatek, Jelena Ostapenko, and Anna Kalinskaya. IBM and the All England Lawn Tennis Club collaborated on the Catch Me Up feature, which utilizes IBM’s Granite language model and Watson AI platform trained on match data and editorial style from Wimbledon. Despite the errors, both organizations expressed confidence in the feature’s ability to evolve with human oversight and improve its accuracy over time. The Catch Me Up feature aims to complement the wide range of editorial content produced by Wimbledon’s team of writers, offering in-depth coverage of The Championships for a global audience.
