Construction has officially started on a new $10 billion project, the Amazon Web Services Center at the Madison County megasite. The first wave of data centers is projected to be operational by the second or third quarter of 2025. Joey Deason, the Executive Director of the Madison County Economic Development Authority, expressed excitement about the future prospects for Madison County with the new corporate citizen, AWS. Construction work on the MegaSite has been ongoing for months and hiring is currently underway, with the first members of the Mississippi AWS team already hired.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the MegaSite Spec Building on May 20, attended by prominent dignitaries including Governor Tate Reeves and several state representatives. Governor Reeves commended the legislature for swiftly passing legislation to accommodate the AWS investment, expected to bring up to 1,000 jobs to Madison County through two facilities. One facility is being constructed at the MegaSite, while the other will be located on Highland Colony Parkway across from Clark Beverage’s new facility in Ridgeland.

Governor Reeves emphasized the importance of preparing Mississippians for the jobs of the future, highlighting the high-paying and skill-specific positions that the AWS data center will offer. Amazon’s decision to invest in Mississippi, particularly in Madison County, was influenced by the favorable business environment and educational prospects in the region. As work progresses at the MegaSite, construction at the Ridgeland location is also moving forward, with the new substation underway.

Mayor Gene F. McGee of Ridgeland expressed excitement about the progress of the AWS center, noting the quality of the project and anticipating the start of construction next year. He predicted that buildings would be visible by 2025 once construction gains momentum. The AWS investment represents the largest capital investment in Mississippi history and has the potential to shape the future labor market in the local and global economy with its high-skilled job opportunities.

Overall, the development of the Amazon Web Services Center at the Madison County megasite signifies a significant milestone in economic growth and job creation for the region. With its immense investment and job creation potential, the project is poised to play a key role in shaping the economic landscape of Mississippi for years to come.
