The US state of Florida has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman, alleging that the tech giant and its CEO put profit over public safety with its flagship artificial intelligence (AI) product, ChatGPT.
The lawsuit, filed Monday local time by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier in Florida state court, is one of the most significant enforcement actions to date by a prosecutor against an AI company.
OpenAI and other major technology companies are embroiled in a growing number of legal cases related to the alleged harm their products have caused.
Six key elements
The complaint begins with a screenshot of OpenAI’s own parental controls page, which states that ChatGPT was “built with security in mind.” Then the state responds in a stand-alone paragraph with two words: “Not like that.”
This signals the case’s central allegation: that OpenAI sold ChatGPT to the public as safe and reliable, even though it knew it could cause serious harm
