In preparation for upcoming Linux tests of AMD Ryzen AI 300 series laptops, a comparison was conducted in the Phoronix lab between various Intel/AMD laptops to assess performance. The focus of this comparison was on how the existing AMD Zen 4 laptop, specifically the Framework 13 and Framework 16 models, stacks up against the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H “Meteor Lake” SoC. The tests were conducted using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the latest Linux 6.10 development kernel, and the most recent version of the open-source Mesa graphics driver.

The performance comparison is particularly timely with the imminent release of the AMD Zen 5-powered Ryzen AI 3000 series and Intel Lunar Lake laptops expected in Q3. The article showcases the current-generation Intel and AMD laptop processors’ performance using the latest open-source code and Linux. Over 400 benchmarks were run across various workloads to provide insights into CPU package power consumption and performance per watt.

Each laptop under test was installed with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and updated to the Linux 6.10 Git kernel alongside Mesa 24.2-devel through the Oibaf PPA. Utilizing Linux 6.10 allowed for a detailed examination of the performance of AMD and Intel laptops with the latest driver enhancements. The tests included the Core Ultra 7 155H from an Acer Swift Go 13 laptop, the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS in a Framework 16 review sample, and the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U in a Framework 13 review sample. All laptops featured 16GB of RAM and NVMe storage.

The upcoming Ryzen AI 300 series laptop test in July will involve pre-ordered hardware and will offer a more extensive comparison of Linux laptops for those interested in current and previous CPUs. The tests encompassed browser comparisons, code compilation, creator workloads like 7-Zip and Blender, HPC workloads, databases, low-power scenarios, and peripheral cases. Additionally, performance in tasks like Python processing, JSON handling, video encoding, TensorFlow AI, PyTorch, and OpenVINO was evaluated. The comparison also looked at applications such as RawTherapee, Darktable, Java, and a geometric mean metric.
