Apple announced its new one iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Maxwho have favourited better cameras, 120Hz screens, new processors (which Apple claims are the fastest in a phone), better battery life, and smaller notches compared to their predecessors. But should you upgrade from the iPhone 12 and Apple beat the Android competition? Here’s how Apple fares on paper with Samsung, OnePlus, Google, and its own earlier devices.

One thing to note before we dive in is that the specs don’t tell the full story. There are the obviously difficult comparisons (how does an Apple A15 chip compare to a Snapdragon 888 and how do you compare conventional phones with foldable ones) as well as the small details that don’t fit neatly on a data sheet. For example, one of Apple’s Pro features is the ability to record 4K ProRes on its high-end phones – with the exception of the 128GB storage models, which are limited to 1080p ProRes.

An obvious competitor is also missing: Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Google didn’t give us the full specs in its partial announcementmaking it difficult to include in a specification comparison.

But let’s put all these caveats aside because you might be looking for a phone at the moment. How does the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini fare against their Android competitors from specification to specification? Incidentally, the prices in this comparison are for the unlocked iPhones, which are $ 30 more than the carrier versions.

As in the past few years, we see Apple not necessarily playing a spec game, especially when it comes to cameras. Some of the higher quality Android competitors have four or even nearly ten times more megapixels than Apple’s cameras. Whether that gives them an advantage or not remains to be seen when we test Apple’s “dramatically more powerful” cameras. Both Apple and Google have traditionally prioritized larger pixels for low-light performance rather than raw resolution.

Finally, let’s take a look at how Apple did when it came to updating its specs compared to last year. It’s worth noting that while you can no longer buy this phone from Apple, despite including the 12 Pro, which makes the comparison more useful for upgrades than it is for cross-shoppers.

One interesting point is that the phones haven’t changed in terms of width, height, or screen size, but they have gotten a little thicker and a little heavier. They’re packing a whole load of new technology, however, so maybe that’s understandable.

What the specs don’t reveal, however, is how unfavorably the iPhone 12’s price tag is – at first glance it might seem like a reasonable buy that’s $ 100 cheaper, but at that price you only get half the storage. When you get a 128GB iPhone 12, you save just $ 50 compared to the 128GB iPhone 13, which has all of the upgrades for screens, cameras, battery life, and everything else has been announced by Apple on Tuesday. Sure, it’s technically less expensive, but you’d be giving up a lot for very little savings.
