Kaseya provides software that businesses use to manage their computer systems and supplies it to managed service provider companies that serve tens of thousands of businesses. The affected software was distributed between 800 and 1,500 companies, guessed Kaseya. These companies then could not access their files. Instead, they were asked to pay a ransom in order to receive a decryption key that would return control to them. Ransom demands ranged from $ 45,000 for smaller businesses to $ 5 million for larger ones.
