Telefónica Tech and IBM have joined forces in Spain to tap into the growing interest in AI among companies. A recent IBM study shows that almost half of Spanish companies using AI have ramped up their investments in this area over the past two years. This presents a prime opportunity for Telefónica Tech and IBM to provide solutions that cater to the needs of these businesses.
The collaboration will kick off with the creation of Shark.X, an open, hybrid, multi-cloud platform for data management and artificial intelligence. This platform, hosted at Telefónica Tech’s La Cabina business innovation center, integrates IBM’s virtualized storage, computing, and networking solutions. Shark.X is designed to streamline the entire data value chain and leverage IBM’s watsonx data and AI platform for the development and deployment of AI applications.
Telefónica Tech will offer consulting services to tailor the platform to each client’s needs, seamlessly integrate it into their existing environment, and develop specific AI use cases. The partners have set up a use case office to demonstrate their joint capabilities and work on multiple minimum viable products (MVPs). These MVPs encompass a range of solutions like GenAI for generating IT application code, cognitive assistants for industrial operations, process automation, customer service enhancements, and audiovisual content and text document management.
Furthermore, Telefónica and IBM will provide educational resources, training, and certification programs to help companies acquire the essential skills in AI. Industry experts foresee that by 2026, more than 80% of global companies will have embraced GenAI technologies, a significant rise from the current adoption rate of less than 5% in 2023.
Elena Gil Lizasoain, the director of Telefónica Tech’s AI and data unit, underscored the importance of this partnership in driving efficient and sustainable business practices through advanced AI and data management solutions. The main goal of this collaboration is to guide companies in the responsible usage of AI technologies, ensuring accuracy, productivity, and ethical compliance.
