In an effort to enhance the capabilities of Grok, an AI model developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, Dell Technologies Inc. has announced a partnership with NVIDIA Corporation to build a Dell AI factory. This factory will play a crucial role in boosting the performance of Grok-1.5V, the first-generation multi-mode model introduced by xAI in April.
Grok is a generative AI chatbot designed to process a wide range of visual information, including documents, diagrams, and photographs, in addition to text. Its ability to understand the physical world has been highlighted by xAI, and the AI model has reportedly outperformed its competitors on the RealWorldQA benchmark.
Dell is involved in assembling half of the racks that will be used in the supercomputer xAI is building to enhance Grok’s capabilities. Elon Musk has hinted at a partnership with Super Micro Computer Inc, a San Francisco-based server maker known for its strong relationships with chip companies like Nvidia and innovative liquid cooling technology. Super Micro Computer Inc. has confirmed its involvement with xAI to Reuters.
xAI announced plans to build a supercomputer called the “Computing Gigafactory” in collaboration with Oracle, aiming to boost the capabilities of the Grok AI chatbot. The supercomputer is expected to be operational in the fall of 2025 and will utilize up to 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs based on the Hopper architecture, potentially making it four times larger than the largest existing GPU clusters.
Elon Musk’s move to build this supercomputer is seen as an attempt to surpass rival GPU groups in terms of size and capabilities. This strategic partnership involving Dell, NVIDIA, and Super Micro Computer Inc. aims to revolutionize the AI landscape and push the boundaries of technology.
