Traditionally, the approach to designing corporate storage systems has been that of an appliance that is attached to the corporate network or resides on the SAN. This used to be consistent with the computing approach, where applications were run on dedicated (virtual or physical) servers.

Cloud computing has changed the way we view computing infrastructure. It doesn’t matter how a particular server is set up. The way in which computational elements are interconnected and their overall performance put together into a coherent, flexible and scalable computer system is of much greater importance. Because of this, much more intellectual energy was put into designing the orchestration infrastructure (like Kubernetes). Additionally, large iron building blocks are not as common in cloud environments, where finer-grained elements offer greater flexibility and scalability control.
