A record high of $ 41.8 billion was spent on cloud computing in the recently closed quarter as businesses relied heavily on the internet to weather the pandemic, Market Tracker Canalys said Thursday.

According to Canalys, spending on “cloud infrastructure services” increased by nearly $ 11 billion over the first three months of last year.

“Cloud has emerged as a winner across all sectors over the past year, essentially since the Covid-19 pandemic began and lockdowns were implemented,” said Blake Murray, research analyst at Canalys.

“Businesses relied on digital services and online to keep them up and running and adapt to the evolving situation.”

Despite the high spending on the cloud over the past year, Murray says most companies have yet to implement the “digital transformation”.

The analyst expected the “migration” to the cloud to continue as confidence in the economy improves, postponing projects for new life.
