The next big technical innovation that will drive first-person shooters like Battlefield will be cloud computing, says DICE GM Oskar Gabrielson. Speaking while today’s future of the FPS streamsays Gabrielson that the technology is “a few years away” but that it will have a huge impact on the genre.

“Cloud computing really changed a number of other industries, and gaming barely touched it,” says Gabrielson. “So when you think of a game like Battlefield, we now have things like AI in the game, destruction, actually creating procedural layers. And the next generation consoles are of course super powerful, but if we implement a large part of this logic. ”Out into the cloud […] we can do really upscale computing that we couldn’t in the past … destruction, visual fidelity. I think it’s only a few more years away and then you’ll see some pretty cool shooter games I could imagine. But we will see.”
