Cleveland Clinic, along with IBM, organized the Cleveland Discovery and Innovation Forum to examine the cutting-edge research landscape in life sciences and healthcare driven by high-performance computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum computing. The event, held on April 23 at the Cleveland Clinic’s main campus in Cleveland, Ohio, brought together global leaders from academia, industry, and government to discuss the future of science and technology in healthcare.
Top officials from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health collaborated with Cleveland Clinic and IBM to delve into various topics related to discovery, innovation, and technology in healthcare and life sciences. Sessions featured keynote talks by prominent figures such as Renee Wegrzyn, Ph.D., and discussions between leaders like Tom Mihaljevic, MD, CEO of Cleveland Clinic, and Gary Cohn, VP of IBM, on advancing research through advanced computing technologies.
Other sessions touched upon biomedical progress accelerated by quantum computing, the deployment of AI in biomedical research, and promoting health equity through digital technology. Furthermore, the event unveiled the first companies chosen for the Cleveland Clinic Quantum Innovation Catalyst Program, a startup-focused initiative exploring quantum computing to improve healthcare. Selected companies included algorithmic, Qradle, and Image Health.
The Cleveland Discovery and Innovation Forum is part of a larger 10-year collaboration between Cleveland Clinic and IBM, known as the Discovery Accelerator program, aiming to enhance biomedical research using high-performance computing, AI, and quantum computing. A key achievement of the partnership was the introduction of the IBM Quantum System One at the Cleveland Clinic campus, the first quantum computer dedicated to healthcare research.
The Discovery Accelerator program serves as the technological backbone for biomedical research within the Cleveland Innovation District, a collaborative effort between the State of Ohio, JobsOhio, and Cleveland’s educational and healthcare institutions. The initiative aims to create jobs, expedite research, and prepare the future workforce through innovative partnerships.
Overall, the Cleveland Discovery and Innovation Forum highlighted the critical role of advanced technologies like AI, quantum computing, and high-performance computing in advancing healthcare and life sciences. By fostering collaborations between industry, government, and academia, the event underscored the potential for technological innovation to revolutionize the future of healthcare.
