Citrix Unveils Exclusive ‘Platform’ License Available by Invitation Only

Citrix has introduced a new “Platform License” that will be invitation-only and has ceased selling some products separately. The license covers all of Citrix’s current developments as well as any future acquisitions, focusing on virtual desktops, endpoints, and network security. The license includes features from the NetScaler application suite, now known as Citrix ADC, and also includes Citrix Analytics, uberAgent, and Citrix Secure Private Access.

This move by Citrix is similar to what Broadcom recently did with VMware products, streamlining offerings to make it easier for customers. The platform license eliminates the need to navigate through multiple editions and add-ons to access key features. The second platform mentioned, “Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud”, includes additional features and is intended for larger setups of 250 seats or more.

The goal of these licenses is to compete with VMware’s Horizon virtual desktop suite and provide a more comprehensive solution for customers. These new licenses come one year after Citrix stopped selling perpetual licenses and subscriptions. Details such as pricing and the fate of standalone subscriptions have not been provided yet, but Citrix is expected to respond soon.

Citrix’s parent company, Cloud Software Group, has not commented on the strategy of the newly independent server virtualization business, XenServer. Interestingly, server virtualization is not included in the new licenses, despite past emphasis on optimizing hypervisors for hosting Citrix products.

Overall, Citrix’s new Platform License and Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud offerings aim to simplify and consolidate their product portfolio while providing a competitive alternative to VMware’s offerings. Further details on pricing and specific features are expected to be released in the near future.
