CISOs: Think strategically to beat the bad guys

As cyber threats multiply and become more difficult to stop every day, CIOs and CISOs must take a strategic approach to protecting their organizations.

Too many organizations still rely too heavily on point solutions. These include web application firewalls, antivirus software, endpoint detection and response, and other tools designed to prevent certain types of attacks from gaining a foothold on networks, said Spiros Liolis, chief technologist of global alliances at Micro Focus.

And yet, a sophisticated phishing email, targeted at just the right employee with just the right payload, can overcome even the most ambitious and multi-layered defenses.

Cybersecurity silos are gone or should be, Liolis said. “It’s a strategic question. Organizations need to start thinking about it [cybersecurity] in a very systemic way, but the majority of them don’t even know where to start.”
