Tech giant Cisco Systems recently joined Microsoft and IBM in signing a pledge sponsored by the Vatican to ensure ethical development and use of artificial intelligence for the common good. CEO Chuck Robbins signed the Rome Call document, outlining key pillars for responsible AI use, emphasizing the need for transparency, inclusion, accountability, impartiality, and safety in AI systems. The document was presented and signed at a Vatican conference in February 2020 by representatives from Microsoft and IBM, with participation from universities, UN agencies, private corporations, and non-governmental organizations.

Pope Francis has called for an international treaty to ensure the ethical development and use of AI, dedicating this year’s annual message for peace to the topic. Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia of the Pontifical Academy for Life welcomed Cisco’s participation, highlighting the company’s expertise in infrastructure, security, data protection, and AI systems.

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, demonstrated by systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has both impressed users with its human-like capabilities and raised concerns about its potential risks to jobs, privacy, security, copyright protection, and even human life itself. Cisco’s commitment to the ethical use of AI aligns with the Vatican’s efforts to promote responsible AI development for the benefit of all humanity.
