Cisco president flags AI roadblocks

Cisco president and chief product officer Jeetu Patel (pictured) outlined three impediments to mass deployments of AI in areas including agentic, robotics and large world models during the company’s AI Summit.

The first is infrastructure constraint, despite the billions of dollars companies including Cisco, OpenAI and Nvidia are investing in AI.

“We just don’t have enough power, compute and network bandwidth, [and] now memory,” Patel explained. “You start to think about data centre shelves [needed] to go out and satiate the needs of AI.”

During a conversation with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Patel said $5 trillion dollars would be spent in 2026 to increase AI capacity.

“Maybe if that really gets spent quickly, that will be enough,” Altman said.

“And I think it’s also possible that along the way we have some supply gluts temporarily.”
