Cisco unveiled a new set of cutting-edge security offerings at Cisco Live 2024, aimed at solidifying its position as a leader in defense capabilities driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Jeetu Patel, the company’s executive vice president and general manager of security and collaboration, emphasized that the goal is to integrate security seamlessly into the network infrastructure itself.

One of the key announcements focused on the capabilities of the new Cisco Hypershield security platform, which was first introduced at the RSA Conference 2024. Hypershield is a security architecture designed to protect modern data centers on an AI scale. The platform will soon support Pensando data processing units and Intel infrastructure processing units, specialized processors that accelerate workloads within data centers in the AI era. Hypershield is expected to be available to the public in August, with support for specialized processing units following shortly after.

Tom Gillis, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco’s security business group, noted that there is already high demand from customers eager to adopt Hypershield as early adopters. During his keynote speech, Patel highlighted that Hypershield represents a new category of security product unmatched by any other company, making it Cisco’s most significant security innovation in four decades.

In addition to Hypershield, Cisco introduced a new generation of firewall, the 1200 series, set to launch in October. These compact, high-performance firewalls are SD-WAN-enabled and offer significantly higher performance compared to competitive alternatives. The company also unveiled Cisco Security Cloud Control, a new management solution for its Security cloud platform, integrated with data from Splunk, a key acquisition made by Cisco for $28 billion in March. Patel emphasized that security is fundamentally a data problem, and Cisco’s acquisitions and product development efforts aim to provide customers with comprehensive data analysis capabilities for enhanced defense.

Patel further discussed the concept of cyber resilience, highlighting the importance of both response to breaches and prevention measures in the face of evolving cyber threats. Cisco’s expertise in networking, security, and AI uniquely positions it to help organizations reduce lateral movement by cybercriminals within compromised networks.
