This week, Cisco unveiled a generative artificial intelligence (AI) assistant for the Cisco AppDynamics observability platform, along with integrations to Splunk’s IT Service Intelligence (ITSI) platform and Splunk Log Observer Connect for Cisco AppDynamics. Cisco also announced that they will allow Cisco AppDynamics to be hosted on the Microsoft Azure platform in the third quarter of 2024. Additionally, Cisco will be phasing out the sale of the Cisco AppDynamics platform for cloud-native application performance management in favor of Splunk Observability Cloud.
The Configuration Assistant in Splunk ITSI, which is now generally available, offers a centralized console to optimize outdated threshold models using AI models. Cisco also introduced single sign-on capabilities to streamline workflows between Cisco AppDynamics and Splunk, with plans to extend these capabilities across their entire portfolio for increased collaboration.
Tom Casey, senior vice president and general manager of products and technology for Splunk, discussed plans to integrate Cisco AppDynamics, ThousandEyes, and the Splunk platform into a single data platform. This integration aims to provide comprehensive capabilities for application performance monitoring and digital experience monitoring in hybrid cloud environments.
Paul Nashawaty from The Futurum Group highlighted that these combined capabilities demonstrate Cisco’s commitment to offering end-to-end visibility, particularly as managing distributed IT environments becomes more challenging. Cisco is betting that organizations will prefer standardizing on a single vendor to reduce integration costs and streamline workflows across IT silos.
The acquisition of Splunk by Cisco may contribute to a consolidation of IT platforms as competitors make similar moves to unify IT management under a single platform-centric approach. As organizations navigate this changing landscape, it will be crucial to determine the best structure for integrating observability, network monitoring, and traditional IT service management while adapting to the expanding application portfolio facilitated by AI.
In conclusion, as AI continues to simplify software creation and deployment, IT teams must adopt DevSecOps best practices on a larger scale to ensure application availability in complex computing environments. The industry is evolving towards a more centralized approach to IT management, and it will be essential for organizations to optimize workflows and embrace automation to thrive in this shifting landscape.
