Cisco collaborates with USGA to enhance networking capabilities for the U.S. Open

The 2024 U.S. Open Golf Championship, known as the toughest test in professional golf, was powered by Cisco Systems Inc.’s network infrastructure. Cisco has been working with the USGA since 2018, providing the latest technology on the course. The network is crucial for fan support, media operations, security, and overall event management. Unlike traditional stadiums, golf events pose unique challenges as fans move along with players, requiring multiple “stadium-like” deployments.

The network infrastructure included 220 Catalyst 9K switches and 520 Meraki Wi-Fi access points, strategically placed throughout the course. The Meraki dashboard allowed the USGA to monitor traffic statistics, with 80 terabytes of total traffic throughout the week and 56,000 unique clients connected to the Wi-Fi network. Security was a top priority, with Cisco Firepower Next Generation firewalls protecting personal data and financial transactions.

Cisco Video Endpoints running Webex enabled remote reporters to participate in media activities, allowing foreign journalists to interview players without traveling to Pinehurst. The pandemic forced the USGA to find alternative methods for media interactions, and Webex provided a reliable collaboration platform for remote participation.

The network infrastructure provided by Cisco ensured a flawless experience for local fans, media coverage, and related activities during the US Open Golf Championship. Players needed to perform perfectly to win, and the network played a critical role in ensuring the success of the event. The support of the community, including industry leaders like Amazon.com CEO Andy Jassy and Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, is essential for keeping the content free and relevant.

Overall, Cisco’s technology powered the US Open Golf Championship seamlessly, showcasing the premier event without compromise. The partnership between Cisco and the USGA highlights the importance of robust network infrastructure in high-profile sporting events, ensuring a smooth experience for all participants and stakeholders.
