When you move to a new country, you also learn completely new values and customs. When I arrived in Australia, I discovered that Christmas took place on sun-drenched beaches in the middle of summer – a completely different scene to anything I knew in the northern hemisphere. As I adjusted to this new rhythm of life, I found that even the smallest everyday moments revealed subtle but striking cultural differences.
Last Mother’s Day I experienced one of these moments particularly vividly. Mother’s Day was approaching. Since I wanted to prepare a special gift, I asked an AI chatbot: “What are the most popular Mother’s Day gifts in Australia?”
The chatbot suggested perfume, jewelry, books, a personalized mug with a family photo… and a beautiful chrysanthemum bouquet.
