China’s DeepSeek Releases New Open Source AI Model Amid Google’s Gemini 3 Roll Out

China’s DeepSeek has released a new, advanced open source artificial intelligence model  in the wake of Alphabet‘s (GOOGL) Google rolling outs its proprietary Gemini 3. Nvidia (NVDA) stock and shares in cloud hyperscalers sold off in January 2025 after Nvidia introduced a low-cost, open source AI model.

Chinese companies continue to push open source AI models, aiming to gain global support.  The capabilities of open-source models are free to developers.

Anyone can reuse open-source LLMs and build on top of them. As a result, more efficient open-source models are emerging that reduce the computing power needed to “train” LLMs, or essentially feed them data.

Other Chinese companies building open source models include tech giants Baidu (BIDU) and Alibaba (BABA) as well as Zhipu AI and Moonshot AI.

Meta Loses Ground In Open Source AI Battle

Meta Platforms (META) has been the leading proponent of open source models. But Chinese companies have overtaken Meta’s open source models, observers say.

The “DeepSeek Moment” in January firmly validated China’s AI technological competitiveness.

The new Deepseek AI model reportedly scores well on mathematical reasoning. The new DeepSeek model is open-sourced on Hugging Face and GitHub.
