China reportedly banned Nvidia’s NVDA RTX 5090D V2 gaming chip while Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang was visiting Beijing alongside President Donald Trump last week, according to a document seen by the Financial Times.

The RTX 5090D V2 was introduced last August to comply with U.S. export controls and marketed to Chinese gamers and 3D animators, but had also been bought by AI developers cut off from more advanced Nvidia products. The ban extends a pattern. H200 sales remain blocked despite U.S. approvals for buyers including Alibaba BABA and Tencent (TCEHY), and the earlier H20 has also been stopped. Huawei is set to capture the largest share of China’s AI chip market this year, with sales rising at least 60% as Chinese companies shift to domestic alternatives, even as Huang said over time, the market will open.

Nvidia sold just over $17 billion in products in China in fiscal 2025, mostly H20 chips. Morgan Stanley forecasts China’s AI chip market will reach $67 billion by 2030, with 86% expected to come from domestic suppliers.

Nvidia shares rose 1.43% in premarket as investors await earnings results after the close today.
