The Edge web browser looks a bit different now. Microsoft is preparing to release the final version based on Google’s open-source Chromium technology, and it appears that Edge has gained a new logo as well.
It’s unclear when exactly the Chromium-based Edge browser starts rolling out, but the unveiling of this wave-inspired logo indicates an announcement should be made soon.
Microsoft will insert the new Edge logo across all platforms in the coming weeks, The Verge reports. Currently, it’s hidden within the Canary versions as a minigame. The logo doesn’t quite resemble an ‘E’ at all, and thus Microsoft finally departs from any relation to Internet Explorer. New technology, new logo.
When Edge arrived in 2015, the browser’s logo acknowledged Internet Explorer’s history by using an ‘E’ with a loop cutting through rather than around. Internet Explorer, of course, used an ‘E’ with a halo wrapped around the letter. However, with Edge transitioning to entirely new technology, Microsoft plans on upgrading the appearance.
Internet Explorer dominated several years ago, but it fell behind as competitors Chrome, Safari, and Firefox increased features and performance.
Edge’s new logo considers Fluent Design, which Microsoft introduced in 2017. It serves as the design language for Windows, Xbox, and other services. Notably, Fluent Design hit Office’s apps last year.
