Five companies now sell AI chatbot access on five different pricing ladders, and the gap between the cheapest paid tier and the most expensive one has widened to $292 a month. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, and Perplexity each shipped new flagship models in September 2026, and each rewrote parts of its subscription lineup in the same window. That timing makes late September 2026 the first moment all five vendors’ current plans can be compared side by side using the same models: GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna, and GPT-6 Astra from OpenAI; Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1 from Anthropic; Gemini 3 Pro from Google; and Grok 4.7 from xAI.
