In an interview with The Philadelphia Investigator, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s defense intelligence, stated that while the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine is difficult, he does not expect Armageddon to arise. He anticipates the challenging conditions to persist for at least a month as Russia continues its offensive in the east.
Budanov mentioned that Moscow is likely to increase military pressure on Ukraine before NATO’s 75th anniversary summit in July and before the United States delivers additional critical supplies that were previously withheld by Congress. The Kremlin aims to control the eastern Donbas region, but Budanov emphasized Ukraine’s determination to prevent and minimize Russian successes in this regard. The ultimate goal remains to liberate territories occupied by Russia to end the state of war.
Regarding the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine, Budanov highlighted the importance of renewing supplies due to Ukraine’s significant needs. He pointed out that Ukraine’s strategic advantage lies in battlefield technology, where the country has become a global leader, especially in unmanned systems and electronic warfare. Budanov emphasized the role of technology in the ongoing conflict and discussed Ukraine’s efforts to bring the war to Russian territory using long-range drones.
Since 2022, Ukraine has conducted major operations on Russian soil to extend the reach of the conflict beyond its borders. Budanov noted that while this has not yet critically impacted Russia, it has made the average Russian citizen more aware of the ongoing war and its consequences. Ukrainian-made drones operated by defense intelligence have already been instrumental in targeting Russian ships and influencing the conflict in Crimea.
Overall, Budanov’s insights suggest that Ukraine is focused on leveraging technological advancements to counter Russia’s military superiority and expand the scope of the conflict. Despite facing tough conditions on the battlefield, Ukraine remains determined to defend its territory and achieve its strategic objectives. The ongoing conflict dynamics underscore the importance of technology and innovation in modern warfare, particularly in asymmetric conflicts like the one unfolding in Ukraine.
