Catherine Muraga has been appointed as the new CEO of the African Development Center (ADC), Microsoft’s engineering hub, starting from June 1, 2022. With over 15 years of experience in IT, Catherine will be taking over from outgoing CEO Jack Ngare, who has been leading the ADC since its establishment in 2019. Catherine has a strong background in the IT landscape in Kenya and the region, with previous experience in various industries such as manufacturing, aviation, and banking.
Expressing her excitement at the new role, Catherine stated that she is looking forward to building on the progress that has already been made at the ADC. Prior to joining Microsoft, she led the engineering team at Stanbic Bank Kenya and South Sudan and was part of the bank’s executive leadership team. She also served as the Director of IT and Operations at Sidian Bank. Catherine holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from African Nazarene University and is currently studying Digital Business Strategies at Columbia Business School and the University of Oxford Fintech Program.
Since its establishment in Nairobi in 2019, the ADC has expanded to more than 450 full-time employees working in various areas such as software engineering, machine learning, data science, market research, and infrastructure. In March, the ADC relocated to Dunhill Towers along Waiyaki Way from the Microsoft office where it was previously based for three years. The new premises will accommodate engineering, design, research, and innovation teams, as well as the Microsoft Garage, an incubation center established to support technological innovation in Africa. It will also serve as the headquarters of the Microsoft Africa Research Institute (MARI).
Overall, Catherine Muraga’s appointment as the new CEO of the ADC marks a significant step in the organization’s growth and development, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to lead the team towards further success in the IT industry in Kenya and beyond.
