An acclaimed Canadian violin player has filed a $1.5 million civil lawsuit against Google, claiming the online giant defamed him by falsely identifying him as a sex offender in an AI-generated summary of his life and career.

Ashley MacIsaac, a three-time Juno Award-winning musician, filed the lawsuit in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, alleging that Google was liable for the “foreseeable republication” of its AI-generated digest feature, which previously published defamatory claims that he had been convicted of multiple offenses, including sexual assault of a woman, internet enticement with intent to sexually assault the child, and assault.

Google’s AI summary also falsely stated that MacIsaac was listed on the national sex offender registry for life, the lawsuit says.
